As the summer sun blazes over our twin-island paradise, our beaches become the heartbeat of Antigua and Barbuda. The long holidays mean more families, more laughter, and more children splashing in our crystal-clear Caribbean Sea.

While our beaches are among the safest in the world, a perfect day by the sea requires more than just a towel and sunscreen. To ensure your family creates happy memories, here is your essential guide to safe beach trips this summer.

Protection Against the Sun: Our tropical sun is deceptively strong. Even when a gentle trade wind cools your skin, UV rays are working overtime. If you have light skin, sunscreen is essential—apply liberally 20 minutes before heading out and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming. Fresh sap from aloe vera and coconut oil may be adequate for the most dark-skinned among us.

Hydration: In the heat, dehydration can creep up before you feel thirsty. Pack more water than you think you need and avoid excessive sugary drinks or alcohol, which accelerate fluid loss. Keep a close eye on little ones; if they stop asking to play, they might need a break in the shade.

Water Wisdom: The Caribbean Sea is inviting, but it demands respect. Rip currents can occur even on calm days. Always swim at beaches with lifeguards or have a safety officer for your group or family. Supervise children constantly—drowning is silent and swift. Flotation devices are advisable for small children who can not swim. If you are caught in a current, swim parallel to the shore until you are free, then head back in. Never overestimate your swimming ability; the sea is stronger than you are.

Critical Critters: Antigua and Barbuda marine life is generally harmless, but we do share the water with jellyfish. If stung, rinse the area with vinegar (not fresh water) and seek medical aid if irritation persists. On land, mosquitoes and sand flies are most active at dawn and dusk; use insect repellent to protect against bites and potential mosquito-borne illnesses.

If you are on Bird Island, the Antigua Racer snake (the only snake that inhabits our country) is non-venomous and harmless; please do not injure one of our national treasures.

Food Safety: A cooler full of snacks is a beach essential, but in the heat, food spoils fast. Keep your cooler in the shade and ensure perishables stay chilled. Never leave food uncovered, as it attracts insects and mongoose on some beaches.

Personal Security: While Antigua and Barbuda is friendly, always keep valuables out of sight. Do not leave bags unattended on the sand; a waterproof pouch for phones and keys is a wise investment.

Our beaches are safe, warm, and welcoming. By planning ahead, you eliminate stress and maximize fun. Let’s keep our shores beautiful and our families safe. Enjoy the waves, the sunsets, and the sand between your toes. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and make this summer one to remember for all the right reasons. See you on the beach!
