Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, has publicly confirmed that he suffered a stroke, providing the clearest account to date of the medical emergency that led to his recent hospitalization and subsequent treatment overseas.
The disclosure came during a national address on Sunday, September 13, marking the Prime Minister’s third major public update since becoming ill late last month. The announcement brings greater clarity to a matter that has attracted widespread public interest both within St. Kitts and Nevis and across the Caribbean.
While reports from media outlets in Martinique had earlier indicated that Dr. Drew had suffered a stroke, previous official statements from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis had not publicly identified the nature of his medical condition.
The Prime Minister’s health concerns began on the evening of August 30, when he sought medical attention at the Joseph N. France General Hospital after experiencing symptoms initially described by officials as mild discomfort, nausea and headaches.
Government statements at the time indicated that Dr. Drew was admitted for observation and underwent extensive clinical evaluations. After approximately 18 hours of assessment, his medical team recommended that he be transferred overseas for specialised observation and precautionary monitoring. Officials said he remained awake, alert and in stable condition throughout the process.
Subsequent updates confirmed that the Prime Minister had safely arrived at an overseas medical facility, where he underwent further diagnostic testing and specialist consultations. Government officials continued to report that he was stable, fully alert and in good spirits.
In an earlier video message from South Florida, Dr. Drew disclosed that he had experienced nausea, vomiting, neck discomfort, dizziness and balance difficulties, while indicating that doctors were continuing their investigations.
Sunday’s address, however, provided the first direct confirmation from the Prime Minister himself that the medical emergency involved a stroke, effectively validating earlier reports from Martinique.
Dr. Drew’s illness prompted an outpouring of support from citizens, regional leaders and international organisations. Among those expressing concern was Director General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Dr. Didacus Jules, who offered prayers and best wishes for the Prime Minister’s recovery.
Government operations have continued during Dr. Drew’s recovery under existing constitutional and ministerial arrangements. While questions remain regarding his treatment and eventual return to a full schedule of public duties, the Prime Minister’s latest statement has helped remove uncertainty surrounding his diagnosis and shifted public attention toward his recovery and return to office.
