When more products start giving you less healthy skin

Skincare has become exciting.

We have acids, retinoids, peptides, vitamin C, exfoliating toners, brightening serums, masks, essences and new ingredients appearing almost every week.

But somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that more skincare means better skin.

It doesn’t.

Sometimes the reason your skin suddenly feels irritated, looks dull, breaks out or develops new discoloration isn’t because you need another product.

You may already be using too many.

When Good Ingredients Become Too Much

A product can be excellent and still be wrong for your routine.

Imagine using an exfoliating cleanser, followed by an acid toner, a brightening serum, a retinoid and then repeating everything tomorrow.

Each product may have a purpose individually.

Together, however, they may create unnecessary irritation.

Watch for:

These can be signs that it is time to examine the entire routine, not add another treatment.

Clinical Insight

Not every dark circle should be treated the same way.

I see people treating the treatment.

Someone develops pigmentation, so they add an acid.

The acid irritates their skin, so they add a calming serum.

Their barrier becomes dry, so they add another moisturizer.

Then they notice texture and exfoliate again.

Suddenly, there are eight products trying to correct problems that may partly be coming from the routine itself.

In melanin rich skin, this becomes particularly important because inflammation can trigger additional pigment production.

Trying too aggressively to remove a dark mark can sometimes create another one.

Skin Cycling Is Becoming Smarter

One of the more useful shifts happening in skincare is away from stacking every active ingredient every night.

Your skin does not need everything at once.

If you use stronger actives, give your skin recovery time.

An evening routine might alternate between:

Treatment Night

Your appropriate active ingredient.

Recovery Night

Gentle cleanse, hydration and moisturizer.

Then repeat according to your skin’s tolerance and the product instructions.

This isn’t about following a rigid internet schedule.

It is about understanding that skin needs treatment and recovery.

Build Your Routine From the Bottom Up

Before buying another trending serum, make sure you have the fundamentals.

Cleanse

Remove sweat, sunscreen, makeup, oil and daily buildup without unnecessarily stripping the skin.

Hydrate and Moisturize

Support water content and your skin barrier.

Protect

Use broad spectrum sunscreen every morning.

Then Treat

Once the foundation is working, add the ingredient that addresses your actual concern.

Acne?

Pigmentation?

Texture?

Fine lines?

Choose purposefully.

Don’t collect active ingredients. Build a routine.

Beauty Tip of the Week

Your skin doesn’t know how much your products cost.

It responds to ingredients, formulation, frequency, consistency and how those products interact with your individual skin.

Five expensive serums layered incorrectly aren’t necessarily better than three appropriate products used consistently.

Ingredient Spotlight

Ceramides

After last week’s futuristic PDRN conversation, we’re bringing it back to one of the fundamentals.

Ceramides are lipids naturally present within the skin barrier.

They help support the structure that keeps moisture in and helps protect the skin from environmental stressors.

When your routine becomes too aggressive, barrier supporting ingredients such as ceramides can become particularly valuable.

Ask Leslie

How many skincare products do I actually need?

There isn’t a magic number.

Someone with uncomplicated skin may need only a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, while someone treating a specific condition may require additional products.

The better question is:

What job is each product doing?

If you can’t answer that, reconsider whether it needs to be in your routine.

Bottom Line

Skincare isn’t a competition to see who owns the most bottles.

Cleanse. Support. Protect. Treat what needs treating.

And when your skin tells you it has had enough…

listen.
