With a heavy heart, I sit to pen this reflection of yet another true son of Liberta, Pasqual ‘Purple’ Peters, who has transitioned from our midst. He was a friend, a father, a brother and a husband. To so many of us, he was simply a popular and loved member of our community.

I first knew Purple at Ball Beef School, where he and Denver Osborne earned a unique distinction. Almost every morning, without fail, Mr. Hampson’s voice would ring out: “Pasqual Peters and Denver Osborne please pay attention!” Disturbing the General Assembly was simply not allowed. Even then, Purple was unforgettable.
After his sojourn in the USA, like many before him, he returned home and slipped back into Liberta as if he had never left. He became a popular fixture in the dockyard, where he took immense pride in being among the best painters, varnisher and finishers. This of course was his account and I won’t join the conversation. I will respect and repeat Purple’s version because his version was always one worth hearing.
He was a true Libertian, always ready to support community sports and events. He was no easy pushover but no big fighter. His mouth was enough to cower any aggressor into fear. He joked freely about his New York years: run-ins with the law, landlords and “some bad boys.” If he never told you those stories, let them be interred with his human remains.
On a good day, in one of his moods, Purple was easily the kindest and most adorable soul in our community. Flip the script and you would wonder if it was the same person. That was Purple; complex, real and utterly himself.
He loved politics and he loved me. “Missa Greene, me hab you back,” he would say. As he ailed, we reversed the roles and I very respectfully made it my duty to watch his back.
Today, I thank my staff; Tanya, Paulette, Conliffe, Kozie Debbie and Debbie, along with all the members of the ABLP St. Paul’s Branch who made Purple’s care a labor of love. We say goodbye with heavy hearts, wishing this where all a dream but recognizing the fragility of life, we thank God for his time with us.
To his immediate and extended family, please accept our deepest condolences. On behalf of this community he loved so much, we commit him to the arms of his Maker, our Saviour and soon coming King.
Sleep in peace, brother. Sleep in peace, comrade.
